May 12, 2012: The Determined EGG

The Determined EGG is my comics page/website. It's been dormant for a while now, but like cicadas after years underground, or maybe a bear that overslept a spring or two, it's finally starting to wake up. Here's one of the new cartoons below. If you want to check out the old site (and 10 of the best Determined EGGs from days o' yore), it's at thedeterminedEGG.com See it while you can. The new site will be replacing the old one soon!

April 3, 2012: An American Cartoonist in Paris

This past fall, Edward J. Delaney commissioned me to create a "graphic short story" (think, chapter of a graphic novel) for the inaugural issue of the Mt. Hope literary magazine. My piece, "An American Cartoonist in Paris, The Last Day," is now out. If you'd like to read the whole piece (and the whole magazine), please visit the Mt. Hope website where you'll find the online, flippable issue. Or click on the frame below and read the whole short story right here, right now.

March 1, 2012: What They Didn't You In Graduate School (2nd Edition)

The 2nd edition of What They Didn't Teach You In Graduate School is now out. Expanded by authors Paul Gray and David E. Drew, the new edition has pushed the number of "Helpful Hints for Success in Your Academic Career" from 199 in the 1st edition up to a whopping 299. I had the honor of creating the new cover as well as a new cartoon (to add to the 16 for the first edition). The book is available directly through Stylus Publishing as well as Amazon and other fine sellers of books.

Here's the cover and a sample cartoon. *click on images to enlarge*

January 23, 2012: Bike to the Oscars

Last year, Ted Johnson, a writer at CommuteByBike.com, asked me to create illustrations for an opinion piece, which openly invited the biggest names in the film industry to make a pro-environmental statement by arriving at the Oscars on bicycles. No one took up Ted's offer last year, but he is pushing again this year for cycling celebrities. In "'Hollywood Rides A Bike' (to the Oscars?)," Ted references last year's article (and as I did not post or announce it last time), here's my favorite illustration from the batch. If you'd like more, please check out Ted's 2011 piece, "Celebrities: Bike To The Oscars."
